New Health Framework Launched to Overhaul Primary Healthcare in Kaduna South

Published on October 10, 2025

The Kaduna South Local Government administration has officially launched a comprehensive new health framework, a strategic and ambitious plan designed to overhaul the primary healthcare system across the entire area. The initiative, spearheaded by the office of the Local Government Chairman, Rayyan Hussein, aims to build a more resilient, accessible, and proactive healthcare foundation for the hundreds of thousands of residents under his jurisdiction.

For years, the primary healthcare sector in the region has faced significant challenges, including overstretched facilities, inconsistent supply chains for essential medicines, and a pressing need for updated training for frontline health workers. The new framework is a direct and structured response to these issues. It is built upon several foundational pillars intended to create a sustainable and effective system.

A major component of the plan is the large-scale renovation and re-equipping of existing Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs). This goes beyond cosmetic changes, focusing on ensuring facilities have reliable power, clean water, and the modern diagnostic tools necessary for effective care. Parallel to this, the framework establishes a more efficient supply chain management system to combat drug shortages and ensure essential medicines are consistently available at the community level. Furthermore, it mandates continuous professional development for nurses, midwives, and community health workers to keep them abreast of the latest medical practices and patient care protocols. A significant emphasis is also placed on preventive care, with detailed plans for community-wide campaigns focused on sanitation, maternal health, nutrition, and immunization drives.

Speaking at the launch event held at the local government secretariat, Chairman Rayyan Hussein articulated his vision for the initiative. "Our goal is to create a healthcare system that is not only robust and resilient but also deeply responsive to the needs of our communities," he stated. "This framework is our roadmap to achieving that. It is a 'people-first' approach, ensuring that quality healthcare is not a privilege, but a fundamental right for every single resident of Kaduna South."

The implementation of the framework, which will be monitored by a specially appointed committee, is expected to significantly reduce the burden on secondary and tertiary hospitals, lower maternal and child mortality rates, and ultimately foster a healthier and more productive populace in Kaduna South.
